Long gone are the days when movie-based games were unplayable duds designed to squeeze a few bucks out of unsuspecting consumers. These days, they don't just pop up to accompany a new film in the cinemas and then fade into oblivion. It turns out that a game can be made 27 years after a film's release and still appeal not only to its fans, but to brand new players as well. Such is the case with Starship Troopers: Extermination from Offworld studio, which is successfully doing so in Early Access and will be released in full version next month. The game perfectly captures why the film has become such a cult hit. It also helps that the game features renowned actor Casper van Dien in the key role of General Johnny Rico. As he told us both on and off the mic, he loves his character and is having a great time playing the game as well.
Why do you think Starship Troopers has become such an iconic film that still resonates with audiences 27 years after its release?
It is a culmination of the genius of Paul Verhoeven & Ed Neumiere. They are both two of the smartest, funniest and creative people I have ever been able to work with. Throw in the immensely talented mad genius of Phil Tippet, Alec Gilles,Kevin Yaeger and all of the creatives on the film and you realize how blessed you are as an actor to be in this, Also, all of my talented castmates were a gift for any actor to work with.
How does it feel for you to step back into the role of Johnny Rico after all these years in Starship Troopers: Extermination?
I love being Johnny Rico. It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to play this iconic literary, filmiatic and now Video game character. The way Offworld has perfected the Starship Troopers universe and paid tribute to the role of Johnny Rico is a dream come true for me. Offworld has completely honored the journey of my character and embraced the entire SST universe in a way that fully respects the audience and gives them everything that we could hope for in a game. It's like being in the movie.
You mentioned in a previous interview that Johnny Rico has more lines in this game than in all the movies combined. Could you elaborate on your character's role in the game?
I have a unique role in this game as I get to take individuals on a single-player campaign. It can help you level up, improve your skills and just get used to the environment before you get into the 16 player wild ride.
Are there any differences between this version of Rico and the one we know from the movies?
General Johnny Rico is a more seasoned version of the character from the films. I love the arc that Peter & Offworld have given me in this continuation of the film series. I know Paul Verhoeven & Ed Neumiere would be proud of where we have taken it as it completely respects their vision.
Were you involved in any creative decisions regarding your character in "Starship Troopers: Extermination"? Did you help shape Rico's portrayal?
I like to think that I did have a part in the development of this Rico's arc. Maybe because I have not only fully embraced being Johnny but I also truly love it. The way he is written from Ed Neumiere to Peter... Well, it feels like they know me really well and I am honored to be the muse.
"Starship Troopers," much like "RoboCop," is known for its strong elements of satire and social commentary. Can we expect similar themes to be explored in the full "Starship Troopers: Extermination" game?
I know that the satire is in there. I play the game all the time as GeneralJRico and I hear it all the time in the game as everyone always yells out quotes from the film while we are playing.
What are you most excited for fans to experience in "Starship Troopers: Extermination"? Is there a particular moment or feature in the game that you think will really stand out?
I love how we have to squad up and work together to survive. In the film we as cast mates and crew had a strong camaraderie. We all had to work together so closely to make the films work. That bond has definitely carried over to Offworld and the entire SST extermination gamers. Working together increases your chance of a successful, survivable mission.
You've had previous roles in video games like "Wing Commander 4" and the 2005 "Starship Troopers" game, and you've also portrayed Johnny Cage in "Mortal Kombat: Legacy." How would you describe your relationship with video games over the years?"
I love video games. I wanted a Starship Troopers game from the first moment that I saw the movie at Sony. And now I have it. I am so lucky to be involved with Extermination. It is a dream come true.
